Easy to attach mods and you can change the amount of RAM Minecraft uses. I wouldn't suggest anything above 2GB though.
OptiFine is a great help too. Even I use it when I don't even have to.

I've tried using both and changing the settings to absolute low but I still get moderate amounts of lag. Like I said, my laptop is pretty shit. >_>

And closing other apps. Things like Chrome tend to resource hog when it's not active.

Well, try to look with IOBit Uninstaller which versions of Java is installed. If you still have Java 6 and all that jazz... Delete EVERYTHING of Java and re-install the latest 64bit you can find.

filehippo.com hosts always the latest version of Java. Maybe that can help. It helped for me a bit.

Even if I managed to make it playable for me after messing around with all kinds of settings, it's just not worth the effort. I'd rather buy Minecraft myself later on when I get a better PC (and preferably a better internet connection).

It's account bound, not computer bound. Pay once and you can play Minecraft everywhere the client is installed for life.
